Saddle up because it’s a great day for a ride!
The trail starts off on a wide, gentle slope which allows the riders to get to know their horses.
After the hill, relax as we ride onto the single track trail into the cool old-growth forest where the trees are 500 to 700 years old. Up and out of the deep woods we begin a gradual climb along the mountain ridge where it is wide enough to ride along side of a friend.
Always keep and eye out for the wildlife, wildflowers and best of all...HUCKS!! Huckleberry season runs mid July through August and they are a mountain delicacy!
After about 1 ½ hours in the saddle we round the bend at Picnic point and take a welcome break for about 20 minutes. Stretch your legs, pick huckleberries, eat a snack, or enjoy the view of Lake Pend Oreille, as you look past the lake into Montana and north into Canada.
After the horses have rested up we mount up and leave Overland trail back into the alpine forest and head back along the lodge trail with Schweitzer Mountain Resort as our backdrop. (We never cross the same trail twice!)
The ride is more than hopping on a horse for a ride in an arena. These are trail rides! Where the horses treat you to a bonding experience with nature that will last a lifetime. (The sore rear end will go away sooner). |
